The Daily Athenaeum (the "DA") is the official, editorially independent student newspaper of West Virginia University, operating with no faculty adviser. It runs a digital-first newsroom with a weekly print edition delivered on campus Wednesdays and inserted in the Dominion Post on Fridays.
The Athenaeum began in 1887 as a weekly literary magazine, its name referring to the forum in ancient Athens where oratory and debate took place. WVU's journalism faculty took over its supervision in the 1920s, using it as a laboratory newspaper; it became a weekly, then a newspaper, reaching five-day daily status in 1933. The paper became fully independent of the School of Journalism in 1970, governed instead by the Student Publications Board. It moved into a new facility at 284 Prospect Street in May 1994. Print frequency declined over the following decades amid falling advertising revenue, from five days a week to three in 2016, then to once weekly by 2020. The Princeton Review ranked it the 10th-best college newspaper in the U.S. in 2005, 15th in 2006 and 8th in 2007.
