History and Founding

CulturaItalia is Italy's national cultural heritage aggregator, launched in 2008 under the management of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico delle Biblioteche Italiane e per le Informazioni Bibliografiche (ICCU), an arm of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities. It was conceived as a centralized discovery portal capable of aggregating metadata from hundreds of Italian cultural institutions and serving as an accredited national aggregator for Europeana, the pan-European digital library.

Collections and Holdings

CulturaItalia provides access to more than 3.4 million digital objects contributed by over 600 Italian cultural heritage institutions, including museums, libraries, archives, galleries, and heritage sites. The collections span photographs, manuscripts, artworks, audiovisual materials, monuments, maps, and other digital resources. The portal maintains an internal index — the Index — which harvests and aggregates metadata from partner institutions while linking users back to the original data sources.

Among its aggregated holdings, CulturaItalia includes digital materials from thematic portals such as Internet Culturale, which contains digitized Italian periodicals, newspapers, and manuscripts from library collections across Italy. The portal publishes editorial content including thematic itineraries, articles, and cultural highlights drawing from the aggregated metadata.

Access and Usage

CulturaItalia is freely accessible online and targets both general audiences — citizens, tourists, students — and specialist users such as researchers and cultural sector professionals. It interoperates with thematic, domain, and regional portals and shares its data with Europeana under Creative Commons and open data standards. A linked open data section (dati.culturaitalia.it) allows SPARQL-endpoint queries against selected datasets.
