Use of DataThis San Francisco family foundation, founded in 2000, seeks to help funding in education, housing security, economic mobility, democracy, the environment and medical science & innovation. Crankstart focuses on the Bay Area. However, they have also made commitments in Chicago and the United Kingdom.
Grants range from $100 thousand to $1 million. After initial funding, once confidence in the organization is developed, they consider the possibility of multi-year general support commitments. Fifty-eight percent (around $200 million in 2023 grants) went to San Francisco Bay Area nonprofits.
Crankstart points out on their website that they grant “to charities and other nonprofit organizations, not to individuals.”
