Newsjunkie.net is a resource guide for journalists. We show who's behind the news, and provide tools to help navigate the modern business of information.
Use of DataThe Conversation launched in 2011 is based in Australia. Created and founded by Andrew Jaspan, business strategist Jack Rejtman, and the University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Glyn Davis, it is an independent, nonprofit network of news media outlets publishing explanatory journalism by academics and journalists. Articles are written under a Creative Commons license, allowing reuse without modification. Most of the Conversation’s articles are written by university academics and researchers.
Since its inception, the network has expanded globally with local editions around the world. The U.K. edition launched in 2013, followed by editions in the U.S. (2014), South Africa and France (2015), Canada, Indonesia and New Zealand (2017), Spain (2018), and Brazil (2023). Jaspan led the U.S. launch in October 2014.
The main newsroom is in Boston, Massachusetts, with editors working remotely in cities across the country. The Conversation’s U.S. version has published scholars at more than 900 colleges and universities and more than 17,000 articles. The Conversation reported in 2019 a monthly online audience of 10.7 million users, and a combined reach of 40 million people. As of 2020, the site employed more than 150 full-time staff.
Each edition of The Conversation is an independent nonprofit funded by partnered universities, governments, various grant-awarding bodies, corporate partners, and reader donations. Articles share researchers’ expertise in areas like public policy, science, health, economics, education, history, and ethics.
Articles in The Conversation are free for anyone to read and republish and the website actively promotes their republication. Around eight new articles are published each day, and, with republication, reach up to 7 million reads per month.
The articles are regularly republished in The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, CNN, and Scientific American. The Conversation partners with The Associated Press and Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. Articles are picked up in local newspapers, providing analysis in communities that would not otherwise hear from these academics.
In addition to the support of foundations and universities, readers’ contributions are also accepted to support The Conversation.
