Melbourne, Australia
The Conversation is a global network of nonprofit news outlets publishing explanatory journalism written by academics in collaboration with professional editors, distributed free for republication under Creative Commons licensing.
The Conversation launched in Melbourne, Australia, in March 2011, founded by Andrew Jaspan, a former editor of The Age and The Observer, with support from business strategist Jack Rejtman and University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Glyn Davis. Seed funding came from four Australian universities, the CSIRO, and Australian federal and Victorian state governments. The network subsequently launched a UK edition in 2013, followed by editions in the United States (2014), South Africa and France (2015), Canada, Indonesia and New Zealand (2017), Spain (2018), and Brazil (2023). Jaspan resigned as executive director and editor in March 2017 following complaints from senior staff about his management and the group's direction.
The Conversation's international network reported a total readership of at least 670 million in 2022, including republication by outlets such as the BBC, CNN and The Washington Post; its content is distributed daily to thousands of newsrooms by the Associated Press.
