El Colegio de México (COLMEX) is a prestigious Mexican public research institution specializing in the social sciences and humanities, tracing its origins to La Casa de España en México (1938), which became El Colegio de México in 1940. The Biblioteca Daniel Cosío Villegas — named in honor of one of its founders, the historian and diplomat Daniel Cosío Villegas — has operated since 1940 and is regarded as one of the most important social science libraries in Latin America. From 2019, the library began actively developing its Fondos y Colecciones Especiales, and the institutional digital repository (repositorio.colmex.mx) was established to provide open access to COLMEX's research output.
The digital repository integrates electronic copies of academic research produced at El Colegio de México, including articles, books, book chapters, theses, and conference papers. Special collections include the personal archives of major Mexican intellectuals such as Daniel Cosío Villegas, Carlos Pellicer, and Rodolfo Stavenhagen. The library also holds microfilm collections of diplomatic correspondence from the U.S. National Archives and the British Foreign Office, as well as the historical CIDOC (Centro Intercultural de Documentación) library donated in 1979. The catalog includes over 300 specialized databases and approximately 3,500 periodical subscriptions.
Collections of particular note for media and communications research include holdings of national and foreign newspapers, a collection of videocassettes produced by Banco de México, Canal 11, and COLMEX itself, and a dedicated hemeroteca (periodicals collection). The repository also provides digital access to the index system of Mexico's national periodicals archive (SIHENA).
The digital collections are openly accessible online at repositorio.colmex.mx. Physical library services are available to the COLMEX community and, for reference consultation, to external researchers. Interlibrary loan agreements connect the collection with over 231 Mexican institutions and universities in the United States.
