CNR IRIS (Institutional Research Information System) is the official institutional repository of Italy's Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), the National Research Council of Italy. The platform serves as the central gateway for accessing, managing, and disseminating the scientific and technical output produced by CNR researchers, fellows, and associated staff across Italy.
The IRIS platform was adopted by major Italian universities and research organizations starting in 2014 and was developed and maintained by CINECA, Italy's inter-university computing consortium. CNR formally launched its instance of IRIS in early 2024, migrating content from its previous repository systems including the People and Explora platforms. The transition to IRIS placed CNR in alignment with broader Italian research infrastructure standards and open-science mandates.
CNR IRIS indexes the full range of scientific outputs produced by CNR personnel, including journal articles, conference and workshop papers, theses and dissertations, reports and working papers, books and book chapters, datasets, software, patents, and multimedia products. The repository covers all major disciplines, including arts, engineering, health and medicine, humanities, mathematics, sciences, social sciences, and technology. Content is indexed by Google Scholar, BASE, CORE, OpenAire, WorldWideScience, Portal SNRD, and La Referencia.
The repository is accessible to all users at iris.cnr.it. CNR researchers must authenticate using institutional SIPER credentials to deposit content. Users wishing to access embargoed or restricted materials may request access from the corresponding author through the platform. The repository supports OAI-PMH for interoperability and metadata harvesting. IRIS also supports the Italian national research evaluation process (VQR) by providing bibliometric indicators and facilitating selection of research outputs for submission.
