Use of DataMexico's Cineteca Nacional was formally established in 1974 as the national film repository, located at its current address in the Xoco neighborhood of Benito Juárez, Mexico City. Its roots extend to the 1940s when the Filmoteca de la UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) began archival activities. A catastrophic fire in 1982 destroyed a large part of the original archive, prompting a major reconstruction of the collection. In 2012, the complex underwent an extensive renovation and expansion, reopening as the Cineteca Nacional del Siglo XXI with ten theaters, a digital restoration laboratory, an expanded documentation center, and a Videoteca Digital Carlos Monsiváis. The institution is a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and is governed by the federal Secretaría de Cultura.
The Cineteca Nacional holds over 17,000 film copies and 330,000 cinema-related artifacts, making it one of the largest film archives in Latin America. The acervo (collection) includes: fiction films, documentaries, newsreels, short films, and experimental cinema from Mexico and worldwide; an Archivo Memoria (History Archive) of institutional records; the Acervo No Fílmico (non-film collection) of books, magazines, press materials, screenplays, and photographs; the Videoteca Digital Carlos Monsiváis with over 5,000 Mexican and foreign films available on-site; and a state-of-the-art Laboratorio de Restauración Digital. A significant portion of the newsreel and documentary collections from government agencies dating to the 1930s–1970s was transferred to the Cineteca for preservation.
The Cineteca holds newsreel footage from the 1930s onward, documentary journalism from various government agencies, and a large collection of press and industry publications. The Centro de Documentación (Documentation Center) headed by researchers preserves theses, screenplays, trade publications, and cinema journalism. The YouTube channel Miradas al Acervo provides online access to selected digitized archival materials.
The Cineteca Nacional presents public screenings in its ten theaters, with more than one million visitors annually. The Videoteca Digital Carlos Monsiváis is accessible on-site. The Documentation Center is open to researchers. The complex is located near Metro Coyoacán and also operates satellite venues Cineteca de las Artes (CENART, 2023) and Cineteca Chapultepec (2024).
