The Cinemateca Distrital de Bogotá was founded in October 1971 under the Instituto Distrital de las Artes (Idartes). Its first public screening was held in October 1971, featuring works from classical French cinema, American comedy, German expressionism, and the films of Charles Chaplin. For decades the institution operated from two venues: the Oriol Rangel hall at the Planetarium and the Teatro Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. In 2012, a comprehensive institutional restructuring began, culminating in the inauguration of a new 8,500-square-meter building in June 2019 in the center of Bogotá. The new building includes three cinema halls, interdisciplinary exhibition spaces, a Biblioteca y Mediateca (film library and media center), creation and experimentation spaces, and a dedicated Archivo Vivo y Memoria area.
The Cinemateca de Bogotá holds audiovisual and documentary collections in various formats, managed through its Archivo Vivo y Memoria (Living Archive and Memory) program. Collections include Colombian film heritage, personal archives donated by filmmakers such as Carlos Mayolo and Luis Ospina, home movies in amateur formats (8mm, Super 8, 16mm, VHS, Betamax, Hi8, Mini DV), and digitized materials. The Biblioteca Especializada en Cine y Medios Audiovisuales (BECMA) holds over 50,000 information units including books, magazines, archival materials, and audiovisual collections. The archive also carries out digital preservation activities and hosts a MediaLab for audiovisual experimentation.
The Cinemateca publishes the Cuadernos de Cine Colombiano series, which has dedicated editions to audiovisual archives and heritage. It also preserves newsreel-style materials and documentary collections documenting Colombian history and film culture.
The Cinemateca de Bogotá offers free admissions to all screenings. The BECMA library and archive consultation space are open to researchers. The institution's online platform and YouTube channel provide access to programs and digitized materials. The new building is located near the Carrera 3a glorieta in central Bogotá.
