Biography

Thalla-Marie Choxi is co-founder, with her husband, technology executive Heeten Choxi, of Montclair Local, a weekly newspaper covering Montclair, New Jersey, which they personally funded starting in 2017 after Gannett's acquisition of the Montclair Times led to cuts in local coverage. Neither Choxi had a journalism background before starting the paper. Montclair Local became a nonprofit in 2021 and, after the Choxis relocated and ended their financial support in 2022, was sustained by more than $450,000 in contributions from other local donors. In 2023, the publication merged with the hyperlocal digital news site Baristanet to become a digital-only news organization.
