The School offers a Bachelor of Social Science in Journalism and Communication, structured around three streams — Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations, and Creative and New Media — as well as postgraduate taught and research degrees including an M.Phil., established with the involvement of communication scholar Wilbur Schramm.
The curriculum places equal emphasis on theoretical grounding and professional ethics. Facilities include a 4K-UHD virtual set studio, a digital radio studio, a black box studio, and VR and voice-over labs. The School operates the Centre for Communication and Public Opinion Survey and has expanded its postgraduate taught programs and mainland Chinese student enrollment since the 2000s.
Established in 1965, the School is the oldest communication education program in Hong Kong. It began as a two-year program with two professors and six students, with early curriculum design led by Frederick Yu of Columbia University and department head Michael Wei, a University of Missouri graduate. The department expanded to a four-year program in the 1970s and added a communication curriculum, becoming the Department of Journalism and Communication before later being elevated to a School. The School celebrated its 60th anniversary in July 2025.
Donna Chu: Director of the School of Journalism and Communication.
Anthony Fung Ying-him: Dean of CUHK's Faculty of Social Science.
Clement So: Former director who led the school through the 2000s, expanding student exchange programs and media relations.
