The Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv (TsDIAL; Ukrainian: Центральний державний історичний архів України, м. Львів) is one of the largest and oldest archives in Ukraine, serving as the central repository for historical documents dealing with pre-Soviet western Ukraine. Located in Lviv and supervised by the State Archival Service of Ukraine, it is housed in two of the city's historic landmarks: the former Bernardine monastery and the Royal Arsenal. As of 2025 it holds over 765 fonds with more than 1,119,000 storage units, spanning the 12th to 21st centuries.
TsDIAL was established in November 1939 under the name Central Archive of Ancient Documents in Lviv, when Soviet authorities consolidated several pre-existing Lviv archives including the Archive of Ancient Documents (magistrate), the State Archive in Lviv (founded 1913, itself built on the earlier Archive of the Viceroy's Office of Galicia), the Land Archive, and numerous departmental and private collections. The Bernadine Archive, originally established in 1784 as a central repository for Galician court and administrative records, was also incorporated. After wartime disruptions and evacuations, the archive reconstituted as a branch of the Central State Historical Archive of the Ukrainian SSR in 1946–47. In 1958 it became an independent institution, and in 1992 it received its current name.
TsDIAL preserves documents from multiple historical epochs: the Halych-Volhynian state (13th–14th centuries); the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (14th–18th centuries); the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian monarchy (1772–1918); the Western Ukrainian National Republic; the interwar Polish period; Soviet-era materials after 1944; and records from the period of Ukrainian independence after 1991. The oldest documents in the collection are unique birch-bark manuscripts from approximately 1110–1137. Notable holdings include a parchment collection of over 1,113 documents (1233–1923); records of the Lviv Dormition (Stauropeghial) Brotherhood, the only fully preserved archive of a Ukrainian public organization from the 16th–18th centuries; documents of diverse cultural-educational organizations including the Shevchenko Scientific Society; records of Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, Armenian, and German associations; and an extensive collection of court records from the 16th–18th centuries.
TsDIAL holds vital records (metrical books) used extensively for genealogical research. It also contains records of Ukrainian émigré and nationalist organizations, documents of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, and files related to the Ukrainian National Republic — resources significant for cultural and media history. Karamanli publications (Ottoman-script Turkish-language texts by Orthodox communities) are part of its unique holdings.
TsDIAL is accessible to researchers at its Lviv location. More information and finding aids are available at tsdial.archives.gov.ua.
