Chicago, Illinois, USA
WBBM-TV (channel 2) is a television station in Chicago, Illinois, owned and operated by CBS through its CBS News and Stations division. Its studios are on West Washington Street in the Loop, and it transmits from atop the Willis Tower.
WBBM-TV traces its history to 1940, when Balaban and Katz, a Paramount Pictures subsidiary, signed on experimental station W9XBK. The station received a commercial license as WBKB on VHF channel 4 in 1946. Following the 1953 merger of United Paramount Theaters with ABC, WBKB's license was sold to CBS for $6.75 million, and the station adopted the WBBM-TV call letters on February 12, 1953, after CBS's WBBM radio. The station moved to channel 2 later that year. WBBM-TV relocated to its current Block 37 studio at Dearborn and Washington streets in the Loop in September 2008. Its newscasts were rebranded as CBS News Chicago on July 8, 2024. In January 2024, CBS News and Stations announced WBBM-TV would transition to the ATSC 3.0 ("NextGen TV") standard as a lighthouse station for Chicago.
