New York, New York
The Andrew Carnegie Foundation, originally established as Carnegie Corporation of New York, is a private grantmaking foundation based in New York City. It supports education, democracy, opportunity, peace, and related efforts to advance knowledge and civic life.
Andrew Carnegie founded Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1911. In 2026 the organization adopted the public name Andrew Carnegie Foundation while continuing the institution established under the original name.
The foundation follows Andrew Carnegie's mandate to advance and diffuse knowledge and understanding. Its current work combines national and international grantmaking, including programs concerning upward mobility, civic participation, democratic institutions, and peace.
The foundation describes itself as a proactive grantmaker. Most grants originate through program strategies and staff outreach rather than unsolicited proposals. Its grants page publishes frequently asked questions, awarded grants, and information for current grantees.
Dame Louise Richardson is President of the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. Executive leadership also includes program, finance, investment, administration, communications, and grants-management officers.
