Capital Region Independent Media (CRIM) is a community newspaper publisher operating in Upstate New York and the Vermont Lakes Region, owning weekly newspapers, websites and niche publications reaching an estimated 250,000 readers monthly.
CRIM's newspapers include The Columbia Paper (Columbia County), the Ravena News-Herald (Albany County), the Greenville Pioneer (Greene County), the Granville Sentinel and Whitehall Times (Washington County), and the Washington County Free Press, distributed online through TheUpStater.com and NYVTmedia.com. Many of the company's newspapers have served their communities for more than 100 years. In 2022, CRIM joined a wave of local newspaper publishers filing federal antitrust litigation against Google and Facebook, alleging the companies used a secret 2018 agreement to unfairly capture digital advertising revenue that would otherwise support local news.
Beyond its newspapers, CRIM publishes more than 20 community guidebooks for its coverage area and has expanded into newsletters, podcasts and social media as part of its diversification strategy.
Publisher: Mark P. Vinciguerra
