Capital Daily is a news outlet covering Victoria, British Columbia, and Vancouver Island, publishing a daily newsletter, longform investigative journalism and a daily news podcast. It is the flagship publication of Overstory Media Group.
Capital Daily was launched in September 2019 by Victoria tech entrepreneur Andrew Wilkinson, co-founder of the holding company Tiny, who was frustrated with local news coverage in his hometown. It began as a simple daily newsletter summarizing local news and grew into a full digital newsroom; its first managing editor was Tristin Hopper, succeeded in 2020 by Jimmy Thomson. Capital Daily's growth and reputation for in-depth reporting laid the groundwork for Wilkinson's 2021 launch of Overstory Media Group alongside Farhan Mohamed. In January 2023, Overstory fired four of Capital Daily's seven remaining journalists, including managing editor Thomson, roughly halving its editorial staff; three of those let go were on a union organizing committee working to unionize Overstory's workforce with CWA Canada.
