Cape Gazette is an independently owned, twice-weekly community newspaper published in Lewes, Delaware, covering the Cape Region of southeastern Sussex County, including Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Dewey Beach and Milton.
Cape Gazette was founded in 1993 by publisher Dennis Forney and editor Trish Vernon with $50,000 borrowed from family, after the local weekly The Whale converted to a daily format with less community focus. Its first issue, 36 pages, was published May 28, 1993; the paper began a midweek Tuesday edition in 2004. Forney and Vernon had previously worked together at The Whale beginning in 1975. On December 31, 2021, Forney and Vernon sold the company to longtime employee and co-publisher Chris Rausch, a Delaware native who had worked at the paper since 2003, preserving its local and independent ownership. As of 2021, the paper had roughly 20 full-time staff and sold more than 23,000 copies weekly.
