Cambridge, England, United Kingdom
The Cambridge Student (TCS) is a student newspaper of the University of Cambridge, publishing online and, following a 2023 relaunch, occasional print editions focused on long-form journalism and global issues. It is affiliated with and funded by Cambridge Students' Union but maintains guaranteed editorial independence under its constitution.
TCS was founded in October 1999 by the Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) and once produced a weekly print run of 10,000 copies during term time. It has interviewed public figures including former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, director Ridley Scott and BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner. In March 2011, the paper was embroiled in controversy after its editor forged a letter insinuating unfounded sexual allegations against a fictional college fellow. Facing mounting financial losses, CUSU cut the paper's print budget in a May 2016 council vote, ending its weekly print run, though a fortnightly print edition briefly continued under a subsequent funding deal; the print run ended entirely by October 2018. TCS relaunched with new print publications in 2023.
