Overview

The Brazilian National Archives Digital Library (Biblioteca Digital do Arquivo Nacional — BDAN) is the online digital access portal of the Arquivo Nacional do Brasil (Brazilian National Archives), the country's primary federal archival institution. The BDAN provides free public access to digitised historical documents, photographs, maps, films, and other archival materials held in the National Archives' collections.

History and Institutional Context

The Arquivo Nacional was established in 1838 under the Empire of Brazil, making it one of the oldest national archival institutions in Latin America. Originally tasked with preserving the records of the imperial government, the institution evolved through the republican periods to become the federal repository for the records of Brazil's executive branch and a major centre for historical research. The digital library initiative was developed to extend public access to collections traditionally only available at its physical facilities in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília.

Collections and Holdings

The BDAN provides digital access to an extraordinary range of materials spanning from the colonial period to the twentieth century. Holdings include imperial decrees and correspondence, records of slavery and abolition, cartographic collections, audiovisual materials, press-related documentation, and records of Brazil's political history including the military dictatorship period (1964–1985). For journalism and media researchers, the collections include press censorship records, documentation of media regulation, and materials from the Divisão de Censura de Diversões Públicas (DCDP), which oversaw press and cultural censorship during the military regime.

The BDAN is freely accessible online at bdan.an.gov.br. Users can search and browse digitised collections without registration. High-resolution scans of documents are available for download. Physical access to materials not yet digitised is available at the National Archives facilities in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília.
