Waltham, Massachusetts, USA
The Brandeis Hoot is an independent, student-run community newspaper serving Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Beginning the 2025-26 school year it transitioned from a traditional newspaper into a news magazine format under editor-in-chief Jenna Lewis. Its coverage has been cited by The New York Times, The Boston Globe and NPR.
The Hoot was founded in 2005 by Leslie Pazan, Igor Pedan and Daniel Silverman, a group of editors who had left Brandeis's other student paper, The Justice, because they felt it was not accurately representing the views of the Brandeis community. Early staff meetings were held in Igor's dorm room before the paper moved to the Romper Room and then to the Brandeis Media Coalition office by late 2005. The paper has published a satirical spinoff, The Blowfish, since February 2006. Longtime UCSB comparison aside, The Hoot doubled in size over its history and has published investigative series including a 2011 "financial disclosure" series on Brandeis's finances and a 2012 "Shades of Grey" series on race at the university.
