Santa Barbara, California, USA
The Bottom Line (TBL) is a student-run, student-funded weekly newspaper at the University of California, Santa Barbara, operating under the Associated Students umbrella and providing independent printed and online journalism engaging UCSB and the surrounding community.
The Bottom Line was founded in 2006 after a group of students noticed that no campus or local media outlet was covering a series of tenant evictions in the adjacent community of Isla Vista, and decided to cover it themselves. In 2011, UCSB students approved a lock-in fee of $1.69 per quarter to sustain the paper, which has funded its operations since. The paper is overseen by a 23-person editorial board led by an editor-in-chief, with an Associated Students journalism advisor providing non-voting guidance. Alumni have gone on to outlets including the San Francisco Chronicle, The Hill and NBC Montana.
