BMKG Open Data (Data Terbuka BMKG) is the open data portal of Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) — Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency. BMKG is a non-departmental government agency whose institutional history dates to 1841, when Dr. Onnen, a hospital administrator in Bogor, began individual meteorological observations. The agency was formally established in 1866 by the Dutch East Indies government as the Magnetisch en Meteorologisch Observatorium (Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory). It has undergone several name changes and reorganizations; its current name and legal mandate were established on 6 September 2008 by government regulation.
The BMKG Open Data portal (data.bmkg.go.id) provides free online access to a wide range of meteorological, climatological, and geophysical datasets produced by BMKG's nationwide network of stations. Available data types include weather forecasts, climate data, earthquake records, rainfall data, seismological data, and wind and temperature measurements from stations across Indonesia's provinces and districts. Users can search for data availability by station type, parameter, province, and district, and download climate or earthquake data after free account registration.
BMKG's open data holdings are of particular significance for researchers studying Indonesian natural hazard history, climate variability, and tropical meteorology. The agency has operated a Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) since 1986 and manages extensive historical records on Indonesian seismic activity and weather patterns.
The data portal is freely accessible at data.bmkg.go.id. Registration is required to download datasets. BMKG also provides a mobile application (i-BMKG) and three additional mobile apps: Info BMKG, InfoNappe, and InfoGéol. The agency's headquarters are at Jalan Angkasa I No. 2 Kemayoran, Jakarta Pusat.
