BMG is a global music company with headquarters in Berlin, encompassing music publishing and recorded music.
BMG is wholly owned by Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA, one of Bertelsmann's eight business divisions. In April 2026, Bertelsmann and Great Mountain Partners (owner of Concord) announced a merger of BMG and Concord under the BMG name; the combined company is set to be owned approximately 67 percent by Bertelsmann and approximately 33 percent by affiliates of Great Mountain Partners. The merger was cleared by German and U.S. antitrust regulators in June 2026 and is expected to close in the second half of 2026.
BMG was originally founded in 1985 and relaunched in 2008 after Bertelsmann exited its Sony BMG joint venture. Investment firm KKR held a 51 percent stake in BMG from 2009 to 2013, after which Bertelsmann reacquired full ownership.
