Biography

Gary Black is a Texas-born journalist who serves as opinion editor for the Anchorage Daily News. After attending college in Houston, he worked in an editorial role at the Houston Chronicle before applying for a copy editor position at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner in 2006. Over 19 years at the News-Miner, he moved from copy editor to features editor and then, for the last five years of his tenure, to managing editor. In September 2025 he joined the Anchorage Daily News as its full-time opinion editor, succeeding a period in which retiring editor David Hulen covered the role on an interim basis.
