The Bjerknes Climate Data Centre (BCDC) is the data management and archiving arm of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries. The BCCR was established in 2000 as a collaboration among the University of Bergen, the Institute of Marine Research, the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, and NORCE (formerly Uni Research). The BCDC was established to serve the data needs of BCCR researchers and to make climate science data openly available to the wider scientific community, in accordance with international FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
The BCDC archives data obtained by researchers within the Bjerknes Centre across all its disciplinary fields, including geology, oceanography, marine biology, biogeochemistry, palaeoclimatology, and climate modeling. The centre focuses on data from the Nordic seas, the North Atlantic, and polar regions. It maintains long-term repositories for climate datasets and synthesized data products, and collaborates with many international data repositories to ensure quality assurance and FAIR compliance. The BCDC also archives metadata and data with partner organizations, including SeaDataNet and other European marine and climate data networks.
The BCDC provides data management services for both internal BCCR projects and external funded research projects. Services include data management planning, archiving to best-practice standards, and open public access to archived datasets via the BCDC web portal at bcdc.no. The portal is open to all scientists regardless of institutional affiliation. The BCDC also participates in European research infrastructure networks and contributes data to international climate assessments, including IPCC reports.
