Use of DataThe Biblioteca Nacional Mariano Moreno (BNMM) is Argentina's national library, founded in 1810 by Mariano Moreno amid the May Revolution as the Public Library of Buenos Aires. It is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Argentina and has served as a repository of the country's intellectual heritage for over two centuries. The current building — an iconic work of brutalist architecture designed by Clorindo Testa, Francisco Bullrich, and Alicia Cazzaniga, winners of a national design competition in 1961 — was inaugurated in 1992 in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
The digital object collections offered online represent the library's digitization initiatives, accessible through platforms including Trapalanda (the BNMM's own digital library) and RODNA (the National Repository of Digital Objects of Argentina).
The BNMM houses close to one million manuscripts, books, documents, photographs, maps, scores, and recordings, including the largest newspaper archive in Latin America. The physical library's treasury holds approximately 11,000 volumes, most dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, including 21 incunables from the 15th century and a page from the Gutenberg Bible. Digital collections accessible online include:
The BNMM's newspaper archive is of particular importance for researchers of Argentine and Latin American journalism history. The digitized periodical collections include historical publications spanning Argentine political and cultural history from the 19th century onward.
Digital collections are freely accessible online through the BNMM's online services portal. Researchers can access digitized materials without registration. The physical library at Agüero 2502, Buenos Aires, is open to the public. The library's digital services are available at bn.gov.ar.
