The Biblioteca Nacional Digital de Colombia (BNC Digital) is the online digital portal of the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia (BNC), the national library of Colombia and one of the oldest national libraries in the Americas. Founded in 1777 by Viceroy Manuel de Guirior in Bogotá, the National Library acquired its current name in 1825 and established the first legal deposit law in 1834, requiring all printed publications produced in Colombia to be submitted for preservation. The BNC Digital portal extends the library's collections and services to the public via the internet, providing free and open access to millions of digitized bibliographic, audiovisual, and documentary records.
The BNC Digital platform aggregates the library's diverse digital collections, which span materials from the 15th century to the present. Holdings include rare and curious books (incunabula and volumes from the 15th–18th centuries), a collection of nearly 1.5 million national newspapers and serials, photographic archives, audiovisual and musical heritage materials, and manuscripts. Notable collections accessible via the portal include the Samper Ortega digital collection, the Gaboteca (a Gabriel García Márquez digital collection), a digital map library (Mapoteca), and virtual exhibitions.
The digital hemeroteca (newspaper archive) is among the most significant holdings for journalism researchers, containing publications going back to the earliest newspapers produced in Colombia. The BNC also holds legal deposit copies of the vast majority of publications issued in Colombia since 1830, including newspapers, periodicals, and audiovisual productions deposited under Law 44 of 1993 and related decrees. The Gaboteca features materials related to Nobel Prize-winning author and journalist Gabriel García Márquez.
The BNC Digital portal at bibliotecanacionaldigital.gov.co provides free, unrestricted public access to digitized collections online. The library is located at Calle 24 No. 5-60 in the Las Nieves neighborhood of Bogotá and operates as a dependency of Colombia's Ministry of Culture. Its online catalog is accessible at catalogoenlinea.bibliotecanacional.gov.co.
