The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis, who donated his family's Athenian mansion and their collection of over 37,000 objects to the Greek nation. The Historical Archives became an independent department of the museum in 1955, primarily from Antonis Benakis's personal collection, substantially augmented by subsequent private donations. The museum is a private non-profit institution. As of January 2025, the Historical Archives operate from the Benaki Museum Pireos 138 Annex, following the temporary closure of their previous home in the Penelope Delta House in Kifissia.
The Benaki Museum's Historical Archives constitute one of the richest and best-organized archival collections in Greece, focusing on the political, economic, and social history of the Greek nation over the past three centuries. The 1821 Greek War of Independence is particularly well documented, with personal archives of key independence figures including Georgios Karaiskakis, Andreas and Anastasios Liontos, Michael Soutzos, and Ioannis Karatzas, and records of philhellenic societies such as the Philiki Etaireia and the Philomuse Society. The voluminous archive of Eleftherios Venizelos (1864–1936) documents Greece's most influential 20th-century statesman. Materials include documents, correspondence, diaries, orders, dispatches, maps, manuscripts, photographs, and periodicals.
Complementary departments include the Photographic Archives (established 1973), which holds extensive images of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art, architecture, and modern Greek society; the Performing Arts Archive (established 2005); and the Modern Greek Architecture Archives.
The Historical Archives are accessible to researchers by appointment. Opening hours and locations are subject to change; users are advised to consult the museum's official website before visiting.
