AUSSDA (The Austrian Social Science Data Archive) is Austria's national research infrastructure for the social sciences and serves as Austria's representative in CESSDA ERIC (Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives). It is a Core Facility of the University of Vienna, with its main office at Teinfaltstraße 8, Vienna, and additional nodes at the universities of Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, Krems, Klagenfurt, and Salzburg, as well as at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW). AUSSDA has held the Core Trust Seal (CTS) as a certified trustworthy data repository since July 2020. The AUSSDA Dataverse is the online portal through which AUSSDA's archived datasets are made publicly accessible.
The AUSSDA Dataverse (accessible at data.aussda.at) is divided into several thematic and institutional collections, covering a wide range of social science survey data and research datasets. Major holdings include datasets from the European Social Survey (ESS), European Values Study (EVS), Generations and Gender Programme (GGP), International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), and Eurobarometer. AUSSDA also holds a special archive of GfK Austria social science surveys dating from the 1950s to the 2010s, comprising more than 66 linear meters of records from the former social science department of GfK Austria. A formal agreement with Statistics Austria authorizes AUSSDA to host Austrian microcensus data back to 1973.
The AUSSDA Dataverse is free to use for archiving and access. Researchers can search for and download datasets directly from the portal; some datasets require registration or institutional login for access. AUSSDA implements FAIR data principles and supports data citation via DOI. As part of the EU project Infra4NextGen, AUSSDA offers a range of training courses on the use of social science survey data, data management, and data analysis. Archiving and access services are provided at no cost to researchers.
