The Atkinson Foundation is noted as the founder of Torstar Corporation. After the death of Joseph Atkinson in 1958, the Toronto Star was bequeathed to the Atkinson Foundation. However, due to Canadian government regulations prohibiting a charity from owning or operating a for-profit business, the foundation's trustees purchased the paper and established Torstar as a private corporation.
