New Delhi, India
Article 14 is an Indian news website addressing threats to and failures of justice in India's legal system, produced through a joint effort of lawyers, journalists and academics. It takes its name from Article 14 of the Constitution of India, which guarantees equality before the law. Its coverage has focused heavily on press freedom, preventive detention and treatment of journalists in Jammu and Kashmir, and on court and policing issues nationally.
Article 14 was founded by Samar Halarnkar, a former managing editor of the Hindustan Times and former editor of IndiaSpend and Factchecker, who serves as founding editor. Based on the site's earliest social media activity and a Library of Congress web archive record, it launched around 2020. It is engaged by the nonprofit Independent and Public-Spirited Media Foundation to report and publish stories of public interest.
