Arron Hendy entered journalism through the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) vocational route rather than a university degree course; no university alma mater is documented in available public sources. He began his career as a trainee reporter at the Dorset Echo in February 2008, winning the News Journalism prize at the 2009 NCTJ Awards for Excellence in Journalism for an exclusive story about Prince Andrew criticising the Ministry of Defence. He became a senior reporter at the Dorset Echo in November 2011, before moving to the Bournemouth Echo in the same role in April 2012.
Hendy later joined The Argus in Brighton, rising to assistant news editor before being promoted to editor in January 2017 — the paper's third editor in as many months, following the departures of Lucy Pearce and her predecessor Mike Gilson. At the 2019 Newsquest Excellence Awards, Hendy was named Editor of the Year, and Newsquest Sussex was named Publishing Centre of the Year after growing its digital revenue by more than 25 percent; Newsquest chief executive Henry Faure Walker credited Hendy with putting the Argus “firmly on the UK's local media map as one of the best campaigning and digitally innovative news brands.” He now also edits Newsquest's South London titles, including the News Shopper.
