The Arquivo Público do Paraná holds the distinction of being one of Brazil's oldest state archives, established by Law No. 33 of 7 April 1855, sanctioned by Conselheiro Zacarias de Góes e Vasconcellos, the first president of the newly created Province of Paraná. Named the Archivo Publico Paranaense, its founding mission was to gather the printed and manuscript memory relating to the history and geography of Paraná. The archive functioned throughout the provincial period (1855–1889) alongside the provincial government palace.
Over the succeeding century and a half the archive underwent numerous reorganisations and name changes. In 1909 it was incorporated into the Interior, Justice, and Public Instruction Secretariat and acquired statistical functions. In 1974 it became the Departamento de Arquivo e Microfilmagem (DAMI), taking on the state's micrographic reproduction service. Since 1987, under Law No. 8,485 of 3 June, it has operated as the Departamento Estadual de Arquivo Público (DEAP), under the Secretaria de Estado da Administração e da Previdência. The archive has been at its current address at Rua dos Funcionários, 1796, in the Cabral neighbourhood of Curitiba since 2001.
The DEAP holds approximately 11,500 linear metres of documents in total: around 7,000 metres of intermediate (administratively current) records and 4,500 metres of permanent historical holdings. The permanent collection covers the full span of Paraná history from the late seventeenth century through the early twenty-first century, with the earliest known document dated 1697 (the inventory of Baltazar Carrasco dos Reis, one of the first settlers of the Curitiba plateau). The historical collection is particularly rich for the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Thematic areas covered include legislation, administration, history, geography, arts, and industry of Paraná. The archive offers numerous finding aids including thematic catalogues, alphabetical, chronological, and subject indexes, as well as a published administrative history of Paraná. A programme of document preservation was initiated in 1995. Genealogical records — particularly civil and notarial registrations — are frequently consulted by researchers tracing family history and dual citizenship applications.
DEAP is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. In-person research requires prior appointment by email. Digitised documents may be reproduced in digital formats; electrostatic copies of documents more than ten years old are not permitted. The archive also coordinates the Programa de Gestão Documental for the Paraná state administration.
