Overview

Unit Gambar (the Photograph Unit) operates within the Audio-Visual Archives Section (Seksyen Arkib Pandang Dengar) of the National Archives of Malaysia, alongside the Film and Multimedia Audio-Visual Unit, managing the country's photographic archival holdings.

History

The unit is part of the National Archives of Malaysia, which was established in 1957 as the Public Records Office and took its current name in 1963. The archives moved to its present headquarters on Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur, in 1982. The National Archives Act 2003 (Act 629) provides the legislative basis for the unit's records and archival management functions.

Collections, Holdings, and Publications

The unit sets policy and standards for managing both physical and digital photographic materials, plans acquisition from the public sector, government-linked companies, and private sources, and carries out preservation, digitization, and repository management of photographic holdings for historical reference and national heritage.

Access and Usage

The unit is based at the National Archives of Malaysia headquarters on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, Kuala Lumpur, where researchers can access materials through the Archives' Research Hall (Dewan Penyelidikan).
