The Arizona Republic is a daily broadsheet founded as the Arizona Republican in 1890. Cattle baron Dwight Heard purchased the paper in 1912 and ran it until his 1929 death. His newspaper staff, changing the newspaper's name to Arizona Republic, continued operations until Eugene Pulliam purchased it in 1946 and added the Republic to Central Newspaper, Inc., his media holding company. Gannett Co., Inc. purchased Central Newspapers In 2000. Both companies still own and operate this paper.
