The Archivo Histórico de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata (AHUNLP) was created by Resolution No. 808 of September 13, 2013, under President Arq. Fernando Tauber. This followed a 2012 advisory commission (Resolution No. 302) that documented the dispersed and at-risk state of the university's historical records scattered across multiple campus dependencies. Initially attached to the Secretaría de Extensión Universitaria, the archive subsequently moved to the Secretaría de Arte y Cultura, and since 2017 has formed part of the Vicepresidencia Académica. The UNLP was founded as a provincial university in 1897 and nationalized in 1905 under Joaquín V. González. The archive is part of a broader Red de Archivos (network) comprising more than 40 archival units across the university's faculties and dependencies.
The main fund consists of Presidencia de la Universidad documents from 1906 to 2003, including expedientes (from 1923), organigramas, administrative files, personal dossiers, photographs in multiple formats (glass negatives, flexible negatives, slides, paper prints), plans, audiovisual material, books of minutes, resolutions, and study plans. The archive also holds the personal fund of Francisco Marcos Anglada (UNLP president 1953–1955) and the José María Rey collection related to the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes. The archive integrates with commissions on truth, memory, and the reparation of records pertaining to victims of state terrorism at the university.
The archive participates in the Programa de Reparación y Preservación de Legajos de Víctimas del Terrorismo de Estado (Resolutions 259/15 and 260/15), which makes its collections relevant for human rights research as well as institutional history. Its digitization initiatives have made key materials accessible via the AtoM catalog platform.
The archive operates at two locations: the Presidencia building at Avenida 7 No. 776 and the Biblioteca Pública at Plaza Rocha (between Calles 7 and 60), La Plata. Document requests can be submitted via an online form. The archive also offers guided tours and workshops for educational institutions and the general public.
