Use of DataThe Archivo Histórico de la Universidad de Buenos Aires began its institutional organization in 1931, when interventor Dr. Benito Nazar Anchorena commissioned researchers Ricardo Caillet Bois and Víctor M. Díaz from the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras to organize the university's historical records. On December 1, 1972, Rector Bernabé Quartino formalized the institution by Resolution No. 1,112 as the Museo y Archivo Histórico de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, naming it "Presbítero Antonio Sáenz" in honor of the UBA's first rector, who also signed the Argentine declaration of independence. The archive is currently administered by the Secretaría de Asuntos Académicos of the Rectorado.
The archive's main Fondo Rectorado contains documents from the creation of the University of Buenos Aires in 1821 to the present (for records more than 30 years old). This includes materials from the university's Sección Universitaria Provincial (1821 onward) and the Sección Universitaria Nacional, documenting the institution's departmental origins that later became individual faculties. Holdings cover academic calendars, correspondence with national and foreign institutions, administrative records, faculty and student documentation, and property records of the university's faculties.
The archive is located at Pte. José E. Uriburu 950, subsuelo, in the Buenos Aires city center. Consultations are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 to 16:00, by appointment. The building has elevator access for persons with reduced mobility. Contact is also possible by email or through the archive's Instagram account.
