The Archivo General de Entre Ríos is the provincial archive of the Argentine province of Entre Ríos, with roots traceable to the mid-nineteenth century. Its origins lie in a decree signed by Governor Justo José de Urquiza in 1856. After various disruptions and a period when key documents were held in Buenos Aires, the Law of 10 June 1880, enacted under the governorship of José F. Antelo, formally established the Archivo General de la Provincia de Entre Ríos as a permanent institution. Under the directorship of the poet Guillermo Saraví beginning in 1932 (some sources indicate 1934), the archive was given a definitive and distinctive character through the introduction of classification principles based on provenance and chronology, standards that continue to govern its operations today and that have placed it among the most prestigious provincial archives in Argentina.
In 1966, the archive moved to a purpose-built building at Calle Buenos Aires 282, Paraná. In November 2003, a second seat was inaugurated at Alameda de la Federación 222, expanding its physical capacity. The institution currently operates from both locations.
The archive's mission is to conserve, collect, concentrate, and disseminate the administrative and historical documents of Entre Ríos. Its holdings include materials from the colonial era and the early nineteenth century, records of the government of Francisco Ramírez, and extensive documentation from the era of Justo José de Urquiza. The two main repositories are the Archivo Administrativo e Histórico, which holds the Hacienda, Education, Radio, Decree, and Judicial Expedient fonds, and the Archivo Histórico "Guillermo Saraví", which holds the Government fond, microfilms, and the hemeroteca.
The hemeroteca contains provincial and national newspapers from Entre Ríos, making the archive a resource for press and media history in the region. The archive also holds a digital photographic collection titled "Entre Ríos en imágenes."
The archive is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 12:30. It organizes historical exhibitions, conferences, film screenings, and guided tours to promote public access to its patrimonial heritage.
