The Archivo Fotográfico Universidad de Concepción (AFUdeC) was created in 2001 through an internal project funded by the Directorate of Research and Artistic Creation of the Universidad de Concepción. It was established to enable the comprehensive management of the photographic documentary collections accumulated by the university since its founding in 1919. The archive is part of the Pinacoteca Directorate, which falls under the Vice-Rectory for Engagement with the Community (Vicerrectoría de Vinculación con el Medio).
AFUdeC is responsible for the custody of the historical photographic fonds produced and accumulated by the Universidad de Concepción between 1919 and the late 1990s. The physical holdings currently total approximately 27,748 inventoried documentary units, a figure that continues to grow as new materials are transferred or donated.
The content of the collections relates primarily to the institutional, academic, human, and urban development of the Universidad de Concepción. The Fondo Colecciones Universitarias comprises eight photographic collections from various academic and administrative departments. Other fonds cover the growth of the university campus, student life, faculty, major historical events, and the evolution of photographic technology in Chile from 1839 onward. Press-related and social history materials are also represented.
An online catalogue (catalogoafudec.udec.cl) provides remote access to descriptions and low-resolution watermarked images from the collections, available free of charge. For in-person consultation, researchers must submit a formal information request to afudec@udec.cl and await confirmation. Reading room hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–18:00. The archive is located in the Central Library of the Universidad de Concepción campus, Barrio Universitario s/n, Concepción.
