Archivinformationssystem.at (AAIS) is the online archive information system of the Austrian State Archives (Österreichisches Staatsarchiv). It provides a comprehensive, publicly accessible digital portal through which researchers can search and explore the holdings of Austria's national archival institution. The system is part of a broader digitization effort by the Austrian State Archives to make its extensive collections available for preliminary research without requiring an in-person visit.
The Austrian State Archives, which the portal serves, traces its origins to archival efforts under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and has been progressively centralized over the twentieth century. Its current main building in Vienna-Erdberg (Nottendorfer Gasse 2–4) was completed in 1987. The portal itself was developed to support online access to the finding aids of the various departments of the Austrian State Archives, which include the Allgemeines Verwaltungsarchiv, Archiv der Republik, Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv, Kriegsarchiv, and the Finanz- und Hofkammerarchiv.
The holdings accessible via the portal span a vast range of subjects and periods: from Habsburg administrative records of the sixteenth century, through imperial military and financial archives, to the records of the Austrian Republic from 1918 onward. The Kriegsarchiv alone holds over 240,000 archival items, more than 416,000 maps, and approximately 300,000 photographs. The Allgemeines Verwaltungsarchiv holds an audiovisual collection of approximately 67,000 photographs from the Federal Press Service, transferred in 2003.
The online portal allows researchers to search finding aids and identify reference numbers for materials held at the Austrian State Archives before visiting in person. Orders can be placed by email. In-person access to the reading room requires reservation via the archives' online reservation tool. The Austrian Archives Law of 1999 stipulates systematic declassification of government documents after 30 years, with exceptions for national security and privacy.
