The Archives Department of Haryana is the state archival authority for the Government of Haryana, headquartered at Sinchai Bhawan, B-Block, 4th Floor, Sector-5, Panchkula. When the Punjab state was reorganized and Haryana was created on 1 November 1966, no independent archives department existed for the new state. An Archaeological Cell was created in 1969 under the Education Department to address archaeological and archival needs. A skeleton staff of seven posts for establishing the Haryana State Archives was sanctioned in December 1973, with some posts filled as early as 1974. A Deputy Director was deputed from the National Archives of India in September 1975, and Haryana State Archives became an independent department in 1976.
The department is administered by the Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Haryana, with the Director serving as Head of Department. The headquarters is in Panchkula, and three Regional Repositories are located at the divisional level in Ambala (currently inactive), Hisar, and Rohtak. All archival activities are overseen by the Deputy Director of Archives.
The Haryana State Archives preserves public and private records of historical, administrative, political, economic, social, and cultural value. Holdings include records from the National Archives of India relating to Haryana (1836–1936), Punjab and Haryana government circulars (1947–1983), Secretariat records from the East Punjab Government (1944–1949), and records of the Financial Commissioner (Revenue) from 1901 to 1990. The Hisar Regional Repository holds records from Central Jail No. 1 in Hisar (1899–2001), 673 manuscripts in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and English, private papers of freedom fighters, and gazettes from 1858 to 1999. The department also holds manuscripts and historical newspapers dating from 1876 to 2000. The Archives records oral memoirs of freedom fighters and prominent citizens of the state.
The Archives provides research facilities to bona fide scholars from India and abroad. Access to records is subject to permission from the relevant authority. Researchers must submit a requisition slip for each item; requisitions can be made twice daily at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on working days. Microfilm and photocopy services are available on request upon advance deposit of estimated costs. The department has undertaken digitization and conservation initiatives.
