Archieven.nl is the central online search portal for Dutch archival collections, providing unified access to the inventories and holdings of numerous Dutch archives. The platform enables researchers, genealogists, and the general public to search across hundreds of participating archive services — including government archives, private archives, and the records of historical societies — from a single interface.
The portal describes its holdings as encompassing hundreds of kilometers of predominantly Dutch archives. Participating institutions include regional, municipal, and provincial archives, as well as private and religious collections. The archive types range from the records of former municipalities to photographic collections and maps. The portal was built by a firm that also developed the Digitale Charterbank Nederland, a portal for medieval and later charters in Dutch holdings.
Archieven.nl maintains an open data platform at opendata.archieven.nl, through which all datasets associated with open-licenced records can be freely downloaded. Datasets are updated daily (for EAD files) or weekly (for A2A, Dublin Core, and XML formats). All open datasets are copyright-free and licensed under Creative Commons terms, allowing unrestricted re-use with attribution.
The portal is widely used for genealogical research, offering a dedicated persons search (personen) that enables cross-collection searches for individuals. It complements other Dutch genealogical portals and is linked into the broader Dutch archival landscape alongside institutions such as the Nationaal Archief and regional archives.
Archieven.nl is freely accessible online in both Dutch and English interfaces.
