Marysville, California (print/digital)
The Appeal-Democrat is a broadsheet newspaper published in Marysville, California, covering Yuba and Sutter counties, with additional sales in parts of Colusa and Butte counties.
The paper's roots trace to the Marysville Appeal, first published January 23, 1860, and the Marysville Evening Democrat, founded in 1884; the two merged in 1926-27 to form the Appeal-Democrat. Raymond Cyrus Hoiles, founder of what became the Freedom Communications newspaper chain, bought the paper in 1946 and installed his son-in-law Robert C. Hardie as publisher for the next 55 years. Freedom Communications sold the Appeal-Democrat in 2013 to Vista California, a subsidiary of Horizon Publications. The paper reduced to five-day-a-week publication in 2020.
The Appeal-Democrat covers local government, agriculture, crime, and community news across the Yuba-Sutter region, including Marysville, Yuba City, and surrounding communities.
The paper is available through print subscription and online at appeal-democrat.com; historical issues are digitized through the California Digital Newspaper Collection and the Yuba County Library's Digital Reel archive.
