Use of DataThe Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) is a government agency in Hong Kong responsible for the identification, protection, preservation, and promotion of the territory's built and archaeological heritage. The Historic Buildings Appraisal and Data resource is the public-facing online database through which the AMO publishes its comprehensive assessments and grading of historic buildings across Hong Kong.
The AMO was established under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance, which provides the statutory framework for heritage protection in Hong Kong. Formerly subordinate to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), since 1 April 2019 the AMO has been placed under the Commissioner for Heritage's Office within the Development Bureau, streamlining heritage conservation policy and operations.
Between 1996 and 2000, the AMO conducted a territory-wide survey of historic buildings, recording approximately 8,800 structures. A more in-depth follow-up study assessed around 1,000 items of higher heritage value, resulting in proposed gradings. The AMO is housed in the Former Kowloon British School.
The AMO's Historic Buildings resource documents buildings evaluated against six criteria: historical interest, architectural merit, group value, social value and local interest, authenticity, and rarity. The database comprises:
Historic building types range from traditional Chinese ancestral halls and temples to Western residences, waterworks facilities, and colonial public buildings.
The historic buildings database is freely accessible online via the AMO website. The data is also available through the Hong Kong government's open data platform (data.gov.hk), including a downloadable dataset of graded historic buildings with images and appraisals. Geographic mapping of declared monuments is available via the Hong Kong Heritage GIS system.
The AMO operates the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre and the Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery cum Heritage Trail Visitors Centre, and organizes lectures, guided tours, workshops, and seminars to promote heritage conservation awareness.
