The Al Jazeera Centre for Public Liberties and Human Rights is a unit of the Al Jazeera Media Network dedicated to producing human-rights-focused journalism and to defending press freedom, working alongside the network's editorial teams across its platforms and languages.
The Centre has operated since 2008 as one of two dedicated centres within the Al Jazeera Media Network, alongside the Al Jazeera Centre for Studies. It is currently directed by Sami Alhaj, an Al Jazeera correspondent who was held at Guantanamo Bay before joining the network's human rights work.
The Centre produces original in-depth human rights content distributed across Al Jazeera's platforms, runs a research section that partners with international NGOs on press-freedom campaigns, and provides hostile-environment safety and security training for Al Jazeera staff. Its 'Inspiring Stories' initiative, launched in April 2021, profiles individuals championing human rights causes across the Arab world and has received multiple AVA Digital Awards.
The Centre's content and reporting are published free of charge through Al Jazeera's website, dedicated human-rights portal, and social channels.
