Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (broadcast, 2011-2025)
Al Jazeera Balkans (AJB) was a regional 24-hour news television channel operated by the Qatar-based Al Jazeera Media Network, headquartered in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and aimed at audiences across the countries of the former Yugoslavia.
Al Jazeera acquired the Sarajevo station NTV Studio 99 in 2010 and launched Al Jazeera Balkans on November 11, 2011, broadcasting in the mutually intelligible Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and Macedonian languages with correspondents across the region. It became known for original documentary journalism and, from 2018, ran the annual AJB DOC documentary film festival in Sarajevo. The channel ceased live news broadcasting in July 2025 after nearly 14 years on air, with Al Jazeera citing financial reasons amid reports of an internal audit into alleged mismanagement.
AJB's programming combined locally produced news, documentaries, and live debate and business coverage with subtitled Al Jazeera English content, and its archive includes the interactive documentary project 'Sarajevo Under Siege' marking the 20th anniversary of the siege of Sarajevo.
The channel broadcast via satellite, terrestrial transmission in Sarajevo, and live web streaming; its news operations and website ceased following the July 2025 shutdown.
