Birmingham, Alabama, USA
AL.com is a digital news and entertainment outlet serving the state of Alabama, operated by Alabama Media Group, a division of Advance Local Media. It publishes breaking news, investigative reporting and college football coverage, reaching an average of 11 million monthly visitors.
The site began in 1997 as Alabama Live, a partnership between Advance Internet and Advance Publications' three Alabama newspapers: The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times and the Mobile Press-Register. It was renamed AL.com on April 16, 2001. Alabama Media Group was established as a separate operating company in 2012 to produce content for the papers and AL.com, and in 2015 it merged with Advance's NOLA Media Group to form the Southeast Regional Media Group. On February 26, 2023, the three legacy newspapers distributed their final print editions as Alabama Media Group shifted to all-digital delivery.
Since 2018, AL.com journalists have been awarded four Pulitzer Prizes and been a finalist for a fifth, along with 22 regional Emmy awards for documentary work, an Edward R. Murrow award for podcasting, a Silver Gavel award for political commentary, an IRE award for prison coverage, and Scripps Howard and George Polk awards for investigations of police conduct.
