The AIDS Memoria Quilt Records are a collection of digitized online images presented by the Library of Congress American Folklife Center. Images are of documents and ephemera by quiltmakers.. Started by Human Rights Activist Cleve Jones, he organized an AIDS memorial march for those who died from AIDS. He asked people to create memorial signs of loved ones. These were mounted on the side of the nearby federal building. The memorial, Jones noted, looked like a quilt. The idea caught on and, the next year, people gathered in a San Francisco storefront to create the first of many quilt panels., The panels were meant to draw attention to the tragedy. The resulting collection of quilts grew and traveled the world.
In October 1987, the Names Project displayed the quilt on the Washington DC National Mall. According to the Folklife center, the impact of this display was immediate. Today, the quilt panels, numbering over 50,000, representing about 110,000 of the deceased, are held by the National AIDS Memorial, a San Francisco organization, allowing panels to go on periodic display.
The online panels posted by the Folklife Center are for those quilt panels older than 25 years. Information on more recent panels is available for research in the Folklife reading room.
