Use of DataThe National Library of Afghanistan is a major public library and research resource in Kabul, affiliated with the Afghanistan Science Academy (ASA). It serves as one of the country's principal repositories of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and cultural heritage materials, supporting scholars, students, and the general public.
The Afghanistan Science Academy (ASA) was established in 1978 through the merging of several older academic associations, including Pashto Tolena (founded 1937), Afghanistan History Association, Aryana Encyclopedia, and the International Center for Pashto Researchers. The ASA library and associated public library infrastructure has historical roots in the development of Afghan libraries beginning with the Kabul Public Library, founded in 1957. The Kabul Public Library itself evolved from earlier royal and academic library traditions reaching back to the early 20th century. After years of severe disruption during the civil conflicts of the 1990s, the ASA's library and reading facilities reopened after 2001 and have continued to operate and rebuild their collections.
The library holds books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, and academic resources across multiple disciplines including literature, history, geography, religion, and natural sciences. The Periodicals Section retains valuable collections of old newspapers, with some of the oldest holdings dating back approximately 140 years. The library's Afghanistan Studies collection is a particular strength, second only to the Kabul University Library in scope. The ASA also engages in ongoing research and publication, including an Afghanistan Quarterly Journal focused on social sciences.
The library's newspapers and periodicals collection provides a significant resource for researchers in Afghan press history. Holdings include publications dating to the late 19th century, documenting the development of print media in Afghanistan.
The library is accessible to researchers and the public through the ASA campus in Kabul. The ASA also provides online information about its activities and publications through its website at asa.gov.af.
