Advisory is a free weekly culture and lifestyle newsletter published every Saturday by Splainer, the India-based digital media company founded by Lakshmi Chaudhry. It is a curated goodie bag of arts, culture, food, travel, and shopping recommendations, edited primarily by culture writer Akhil Sood. Advisory is described as the culture geek we all need in our lives — a thoughtfully curated guide to what to watch, read, listen to, eat, buy, and where to travel, written with a strong editorial voice, humour, and zero AI-generated content.
Advisory grew out of Splainer, which Lakshmi Chaudhry launched in June 2020 as a subscription daily news explainer newsletter targeting English-first Indian readers. Chaudhry had previously co-founded Firstpost.com in 2011 and Broadsheet Daily in 2018. When Splainer's daily news edition shut down in August 2025 — citing an unsustainable business model amid declining subscriptions — Advisory and Souk (a curated shopping platform) became the main continuing products. Advisory had existed as a culture section of the paid Splainer newsletter before becoming a standalone free publication. Splainer's broader media operation, Splainer Pte Ltd, continues to operate the Advisory and Souk products.
Each Saturday edition of Advisory includes sections on Eat (food stories and recommendations), Watch (film and TV picks from the editorial team), Read (books, journalism, and reading lists), Art (visual culture and heritage features), Buy (shopping recommendations from Souk), and Travel (offbeat guides and cultural travel writing). Issues are themed around a central story or cultural angle each week. The newsletter also publishes standalone long reads, essays on history and pop culture, and contributor pieces. Advisory is free to subscribe to and is also distributed to members of the Souk community as part of their sign-up.
